The White Flag
The white flag stands tall,
The guerrilla war is over.
A gentle breeze is on its way…
I opened the door to my demons,
I invited them into my living room,
And I sat among them.
To think I had mistaken them for my enemies.
Discomfort crept in,
And for a while,
I thought of throwing them out,
Of rebuilding my defenses behind the door.
I raised my head,
I dared… at last… to look them in the eyes.
There!
My heart tightened,
And my breath caught in my throat.
In their eyes,
Yes, in the eyes of my proud demons,
I saw weariness,
In the face of my uncertainty.
In their reflections, I saw a villain,
The man who kept chasing away
Those who only wished to exist.
I had learned to fear them,
To drive them away without ever listening.
I was afraid they would drag me into misery…
And all alone…
I was waging war against them.
A brief silence,
A deep breath,
Then,
“Let’s raise a glass!” I cried, my glass in hand.
“To us. To the end of our skirmishes.”
A war brought to an end,
My home was their homeland.
My demons, no longer my enemies,
They are now scouts, Faithful sentinels.
